Know someone with a background in urban design?

The Alpena Downtown Develoment Authority (DDA) is hiring a summer intern in the field of downtown beautification, green-space development, and downtown maintenance. The DDA summer intern will be responsible for researching downtown design elements and projects, creating proposals for physical improvements to the downtown district, and reporting to the DDA Design Committee & Board. The intern will also be responsible for light routine maintenance of the downtown district as needed, including watering flowers, pulling weeds, and other tasks as assigned.

The DDA is looking for someone who is either working on or has received a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban design, urban planning, or other related fields. The position is largely project-based and requires the ability to self-start, work independently, and maintain an entrepreneurial spirit. There will be flexibility for the intern to research and work on projects that they believe will best benefit the physical and built landscape of Downtown Alpena.

At the end of the internship, the intern will have gained:

• Experience working with city and local government
• Experience working with DDA’s and in the field of downtown revitalization
• Knowledge of downtown development and its best practices and guiding principles
• Urban design projects that can be included in one’s portfolio

The position will run between May and August 2018 for a maximum of 15 weeks, and there will be some flexibility to work around school schedules or other needs. The position is 40 hours a week and will pay $9.50/ hr.
