Second mural to be painted as part of Fresh Waves this summer

Earlier this summer, the Alpena Downtown Development Authority (DDA) announced that a pair of murals will be painted downtown this summer as a part of the Fresh Waves project.

In a few weeks, one of these murals will be painted on the side of Salon 125, located at 125 E. Chisholm St., by artist Mark Piotrowski. The mural will be painted on the side wall of Salon 125, which will be visible to those entering downtown from US-23 South/State Avenue. The mural will be painted July 27- July 31, 2020.

Artist Mark Piotrowski lives in Bay City, Michigan and has painted murals throughout the state. Currently a high-school teacher, he has taught for over twenty-five years for Bay City Public Schools at every grade level. Piotrowski earned his Bachelor Degree in Art Education at Eastern Michigan University and his Masters Degree in Fine Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work has been on display in numerous solo and group shows throughout Michigan and beyond. Currently Mark is in the studio creating a new body of work, while also working on new mural designs for the upcoming painting season with his mural and design company, MARKed ARTs.

“I am honored to be one of the featured Artists for the Fresh Waves festival this year,” Piotrowski said. “The mural I will be doing is a concept I call a Wave Journey. These waves are connected bands of evolving color that travel and wrap around each other in an infinite loop. These loops symbolize the cycles we go through on a continual basis everyday and every moment. From the act of taking a breath to progressing through the ebb and flow of our typical days, months, and years, these acts are cycles that guide us through our daily travels.”

“The Wave Journeys are a positive and joyous reminder that the we are always progressing and shifting as we march forward in time. I am extremely thankful for the invitation to Fresh Waves and I’m so looking forward to the Fresh Waves mural festival!!”

Piotrowski will begin painting the mural Monday, July 27, 2020 and will be painting it throughout the week (weather permitting). You can view examples of his work by visiting MARKed ARTs on Facebook or on instagram @markedart.

Anne Gentry is the Executive Director of the Alpena DDA and is so excited to help facilitate another year of Fresh Waves. Make sure to follow Downtown Alpena on facebook and instagram for more updates on this year’s installations.
