Yesterday, the Alpena Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was notified the grant requests they submitted on behalf of two downtown businesses were selected for funding through the Match on Main Program through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
The Alpena DDA submitted grant requests on behalf of Hopside Brewery and the Fresh Palate, after calling for applications from downtown businesses or property owners who may have eligible projects for funding. The Match on Main program offers grants up to $25,000 (with 10% match) for businesses that are launching or expanding in traditional downtowns, with a focus on activating underutilized space.
With the grant award, Hopside Brewery will be purchasing igloos and heaters for their outdoor patio, allowing them to make it usable, year-round space. They will also be purchasing canning equipment and supplies to can their beer for local distribution.

The Fresh Palate will be renovating a previously vacant space and turning it into a retail space and a small, one-of-a-kind bar as part of the Social District. The adjacent parking lot they own on Chisholm St. will be transformed into an outdoor dining space.
“I can’t thank the MEDC enough for the Match on Main grant award! This gives me hope that the future economy of our downtown community is staying strong and in fact thriving in this uncertain time in history,” said Eric Peterson, owner of Fresh Palate. “A grant of this size makes me feel comfortable that I can complete my expansion project without stressing the whole time over money. A thriving downtown community brings vibrancy and sustainability to a thriving local economy. Business owners really have to put themselves out there and help from someone like the MEDC goes a long way.”

In the March 2021 round of funding, Red Brick Tap & Barrel was awarded a $25,000 grant to renovate the vacant alleyway next to their building and transform it into an outdoor dining area and bar.
