Memorial Day- what a beautiful weekend to be in Northern Michigan. Trees filled with leaves again, Farmer’s Market outdoors, Downtown Scoops open, lilacs in bloom.
Those strolling through downtown Saturday afternoon, however, were greeted by something a little less… full of life.
Yes, those are hearses lining our downtown.

The third-annual Northern Michigan Hearse Cruise, an event put on by a group of both professional and non-professional hearse-lovers from all over the Midwest, was in town this weekend to display an eclectic mix of hearses ranging from zombie-themed to more traditional. The display was free to the public, but the organization had a table set up to accept donations for the Huron Humane Society.

In the words of a passerby driving through downtown who asked me out her window: “Do you know what in the world is going on down there?!” and after my answer, promptly turned the car around to check it out.
You just never know what you’ll come across in downtown Alpena.
