Over the past 5 years the Fresh Waves Mural Project has been working to help beautify Downtown Alpena and preserve the history of the community that surrounds it. The project aims to bring a fresh, new look to the downtown and to create and expand upon the uniqueness of our amazing town. Being able to host so many different artists and bring them to Alpena creates a whole new perspective for the town. We have had artists participate in the project from all over the state and last year we even had an international artist from Canada who came to Alpena to complete a gorgeous mural for us. The project is constantly trying to expand our reach to those far away and locally.

If you have been waiting anxiously to become a part of this project or you know of someone who has, the time is now: the 2023 Fresh Waves Mural Project Artist Application is now open and accepting submissions! Applications close April 15, 2023 at midnight and artist must submit the application form, examples of previous work, and up to three concepts to paint. This year’s project will take place in the alleyways downtown, and downtown locations are also able to apply to be considered for a mural.

 We cannot wait to see the submissions that new artists will have as they add their pieces to the other 5 large-scale murals and the 12 small-scale installations by the boat harbor. We have been so lucky to have the artists that we have so far; each of their pieces has added so much creativity and beauty to Downtown Alpena.
